The Great Pumpkin Fest
Pumpkin Chuckin is New Event at the Great Pumpkin FestCarol Knight, Chamber Communications Volunteer
A new and exciting competition called Pumpkin Chuckin will take place during The Great Pumpkin Fest, sponsored by the Greater Union Grove Area Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, October 25, at the Racine County Fairgrounds. A captain and three other team members will build a machine to launch an 8 – 10 pound pumpkin. There will be three Chucker Divisions – one for each type of machine: Trebuchet, Catapult, and Sling Shot. All machines must pass a safety inspection and have a safety device to prevent accidental launching. Hard hats and eye protection must be worn by all team members. All teams must have at least one member over the age of 18, and younger entrants must have a parent or legal guardian sign the waiver on their behalf.
The fee is $35 per team if registered after June 13. Registration form and fee must be received by October 13 to avoid score deductions. Set-up begins at 11:00 am on Friday, October 24, and all machines must be ready for inspection by 9:00 am on Saturday, October 25.
There is more to chuckin than just the mechanical elements. It’s about fun, community, sportsmanship, creativity, and entertainment. The Pumpkin Chuckin event promots STEM skill; Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Judges will award points in four categories: Machine Design (20%), Team Presentation (20%), Distance & Accuracy (20% each), and Good Sportsmanship (20%). $250 will be awarded to the top scores in each division – Trebuchet, Catapult and Sling Shot.
The Chamber of Commerce is looking for vendors for this annual, free family event which will be held at the fairgrounds for the first time this year. Food vendors; craft, service or business vendors; and information vendors are all invited to register for a 10’ x 10’ space. A packet of Chucker information/registration and Vendor information/registration may be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce office on the lower level of the Union Grove Municipal Center or downloaded from the website at www.uniongrovechamber.org.
All the elements that have made The Great Pumpkin Fest a popular fall family event are still there, including prizes for best costumes in all age groups, pumpkin baking competition, chili cook-off and more. Mark Saturday, October 25, on your calendar.
